I heard about this one on an episode of the Pomp Podcast and pre-ordered it because of how much I enjoyed that episode. At a high level, this one’s a self-help book that draws parallels between leveling up in video games and improving one’s life.In video games, as in life, there are power-ups and level-ups, Siu explains. These are your faster cars, advanced levels of education, improved skills, better relationships, etc. In order to find these things, you must first set off on a mission, much like you would in a video game.Over the course of that journey, you’ll face obstacles and battles yet eventually overcome them with the help of your team, purpose, and the various skills and power-ups you've collected along the way. Siu’s video-game-to-life metaphor is a constant throughout this one, but it’s definitely not overdone. It’s actually quite effective and refreshing.While some of the book's self-help content is slightly introductory, it’s the application and design here that really help this one shine. I bought this book on my Kindle, and the design / layout of it is the best I’ve ever seen on an eReader. I have read more self-help/business books than I would care to admit. (Usually not by choice. Managers and administrators love nothing better than to assign these types of books as required reading.) This one contains all the typical tropes and, information-wise, is completely derivative. He name-checks plenty of better, more original writers (Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Malcolm Gladwell, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, etc.). Of course, level 13 of his system is “thievery” after all.In point of fact, I bought this for my son, who is a teenaged gamer, in the hopes that it will speak to him about achievement. If Mr. Siu does have something that stands out in this book, it is his commitment to his metaphor. I understand the attraction of computer gaming. I still remember the triumph I felt when I beat Sid Meier’s Civilization II for the first time. (Does that date me?) But I was getting out of games by the time the online, multiplayer games were becoming popular. My son, on the other hand, spends a lot of time playing these games with his friends. I don’t hassle him much because I remember how much time I played when I was young but, as a father, I worry about his future. There are other things to achieve other than gaming success.I would never give my kids a book I hadn’t read myself; therefore, I made my way through. As I was reading, I did feel like this might be something that would speak to my son in a way that I cannot, so I am giving Mr. Siu a positive review on that basis. Actually, if I could speak to Mr. Siu, I would point out to him that he is perhaps missing an important group in his marketing of this book: parents of gaming children. If this book has a positive impact on my son, I would be willing to boost this to a 5-star review.
